The L86A2 Light Support Weapon is the fire support variant within the SA80 5.56x45mm bullpup family, originally developed by the Royal Small Arms Factory — now part of BAE Systems. The weapon entered service with the British Army in 1985, with production continuing until 1994 and yielding approximately 350,000 units. Designed to provide sustained suppressive fire at the fire team level, the L86A2 uses the same ammunition and many of the same components as the L85A2 assault rifle, simplifying logistics and training
across British infantry units.
