During the 1970s, the FN Minimi underwent development in both 5.56mm and 7.62mm variations before NATO ultimately standardized on the 5.56mm for lightweight firearms. In response to a 2002 requirement from the US Special Operations Command for a 7.62mm Light Machine Gun (LMG), the 7.62mm design was resurrected. This variant, known as the Mk 48 Mod 0, was adopted by the US military in 2003. Subsequently, in 2013, an upgraded 7.62mm Mk 3 version of the FN Minimi was introduced, featuring enhanced ergonomics and
mobility.
