In 1977, Denel developed the 7.62mm SS77 light machine gun to fulfill the requirements of the South African military. Since 1986, the South African National Defence Force has utilized the SS77, which has also been sold to at least two international customers and is actively promoted by Denel. Operating on gas, the SS77 fires from an open breech and employs positive side-locking. Featuring a quick-release barrel, folding bipod, and butt, the SS77 is versatile, capable of being mounted on tripods and various
vehicle, helicopter, and shipboard mounts. To withstand harsh environmental conditions, the weapon is equipped with dust covers on the feed cover and ejection slot.
