Dynetics, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Leidos, is developing the X-61A Gremlin. This low-cost swarming drone can be outfitted with different payloads, launched by a mothership, recovered during flight and then reused. The platform has been in development since 2016, with the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) becoming involved in its development in 2018. In November 2021, DARPA announced that during an October 2021 test flight, the Gremlin had, for the first time, been successfully recovered in the air

by a Lockheed Martin crewed C-130 transport.
