The Australian Defence Force is equipped with a domestically built version of the Steyr AUG bullpup assault rifle known as the F88, as well as its modernised F88SA1 and F88SA2 derivatives. The latest incarnation of this rifle is the Enhanced F88 (EF88). This is lighter than the F88 and features a redesigned buttstock, additional Picatinny rails and a new trigger guard allowing for the integration of a grenade launcher assembly. 38,500 EF88s have been ordered by the ADF. Thales Australia also markets an export
version of the EF88, known as the F90 Modular Bullpup Rifle (MBR), but has yet to receive any orders for this version. The F90/EF88 is in production for the Australian Army, under a contract made in August 2015 for approximately 30,000 rifles. The weapon entered Australian service in late 2015 and by September 2017 about 15,000 had been delivered.
