Of conventional configuration, the 5.56mm STM556 assault rifle uses a short-stroke gas piston operating system. It features a monolithic upper and quad-railed handguard that supports a quick-change barrel system. Various barrel lengths enable the weapon to be configured as a compact personal defence weapon, assault rifle and designated marksman rifle.
