In February 2018, the UK MoD announced that it had awarded Hecker & Koch a £5.4 million ($6.6 million) contract for the initial phase of the Mid-Life Improvement (MLI) of the 5.56x45mm SA80A2 family to the SA80A3 standard. The initial contract covers 5,000 weapons, with the first tranche delivered to the British Army in February 2018. The MLI will extend the life of the L85A3 Individual Weapon until
