Developed in the 1990s to meet a German Armed Forces 5.56mm assault rifle requirement, the Heckler & Koch G36 entered service in 1997. The weapon is constructed almost entirely from carbon-reinforced polymer, with a self-regulating operating rod gas system that maintains reliable function across a wide range of environmental conditions. The G36 family includes the full-length G36 and G36V rifles, the shorter G36K and G36KV carbines for export, and the G36C compact variant, all sharing a common modular design that
allows components and accessories to be exchanged across the platform.
