Based on the M16/M4 series of rifles, the Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR) has a heat sink system designed to reduce the risk of cook-offs during extended periods of firing. According to Colt, it also provides extended barrel life compared to existing lightweight automatic rifle designs.
