Colt initially developed the 7.62x51mm CM901 to exceed the US Special Operations Command SOF Combat Assault Rifle requirements for a multi-calibre, single-serial-number modular weapon system. Its free-floating barrel and one-piece monolithic upper receiver are designed for accuracy. The lower receiver and bolt carrier design enables the upper receiver group to be swapped out for any Colt mil-spec upper receiver chambered in 5.56x45mm, allowing the weapon to be reconfigured.
