The P-120 Malakhit, designated SS-N-9 Sire under the NATO reporting system, is a Soviet medium-range anti-ship missile that entered production in 1969 and achieved operational status in 1972. It was developed as a successor to the P-5 Pityorka and draws on design experience from the earlier P-70 Ametist anti-ship system. The Malakhit is a turbojet-powered sea-skimming missile capable of engaging surface targets at medium range, and was deployed on a range of Soviet fast attack craft and submarines, providing a
significant stand-off anti-ship punch for smaller naval platforms.
