The Otomat MK2 is an Italian anti-ship and coastal defence missile with roots in a joint development programme between Oto Melara and Matra; production responsibility now rests with MBDA. The name Otomat is a portmanteau derived from the original two manufacturers. The MK2 variant introduced over-the-horizon engagement capability and mid-course guidance updates via datalink, allowing the missile to execute complex sea-skimming flight profiles to approach targets from unexpected angles and reduce the effectiveness
of shipborne close-in weapon systems.
