MBDA acquired the Viper-E precision munition from Northrop Grumman in November 2011, originally developed under the Viper Strike programme. The weapon is designed to be released from fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and UAVs to precisely engage targets in urban areas where the risk of collateral damage would otherwise preclude the use of larger munitions. The Viper-E's low-yield warhead and high precision make it particularly suited to close air support missions in densely populated environments, extending the
range of engageable targets for platforms that already carry the munition for other roles.
