In 2012, Lockheed Martin received a $64 million US Army contract to advance the competitive Joint Air-to-Ground Missile programme, aimed at developing a single multi-mode seeker weapon to replace the Hellfire, Maverick, and TOW missile families across a unified airborne launch platform. JAGM uses a tri-mode seeker combining millimetre-wave radar, semi-active laser, and uncooled imaging infrared guidance, enabling autonomous terminal engagement in GPS-denied or obscured environments without requiring off-board
designation for every engagement.
