The Mi-26 is the largest operational helicopter in the world, used for transport and heavy lift. The type was developed by the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant and is built by Rostvertol. The prototype first flew in December 1977, and the type entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1983. It has been exported to a number of countries. Russia is currently undertaking a significant upgrade programme to bring its Mi-26 fleet up to the new Mi-26TV2
