Hindustan Aeronautics Limited unveiled the Indian Multi-Role Helicopter mock-up at Aero India 2017 on 14 February 2017. The IMRH is a twin-engine 13-tonne class design intended to meet a common rotary-wing requirement across the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force for a platform capable of transport, naval utility, search and rescue, and other roles. The IMRH programme is central to India's efforts to develop a large indigenous helicopter to replace ageing Mi-8 and Sea King fleets, reducing long-term
dependence on Russian and Western rotary-wing imports across all three services.
