The Z-9 is a Chinese licence-built derivative of the Airbus Helicopters AS365N Dauphin, produced by Harbin Aircraft Manufacturing — now part of AVIC Helicopter Company (Avicopter) — for People's Liberation Army service. The type completed its maiden flight in 1981 and entered PLA service in 1994. Over subsequent decades, Avicopter developed the Z-9 into a broad family of variants covering utility transport, naval ASW and surface search, armed scout, and VIP transport roles, with the design progressively
incorporating Chinese-developed systems to reduce reliance on imported components.
