In February 2011, Boeing received a USAF contract to build 179 KC-46A tankers, developed from the KC-767A. The first phase of the USAF’s tanker recapitalisation will procure 179 aircraft, approximately one-third of the current KC-135 tanker fleet. The service plans that future KC-Y and KC-Z programmes will eventually replace the entire tanker fleet over a period of more than 30
years.
