The Il-38 is a modified version of the Il-18 turboprop airliner adapted for maritime patrol. Development of the aircraft began in 1960, and the first production variant was delivered in 1967. Production ceased in 1972 with the last of 58 aircraft handed over. 30 aircraft are believed to still be in service with Russia, plus five in India, and all have undergone systems
upgrades.
