Category

Development of the Tu-142, a stretched derivative of the Tu-95 strategic bomber, began in 1963 as an effort to provide the Soviet Union with a long-range reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare capability. More than 100 are believed to have been built between 1968 and 1994. Up to 30 remain in service with the Russian Navy and four with the Indian Navy, although the latter are due to be replaced with the Boeing P-8I Neptune
aircraft.
