The A-10 Thunderbolt II, also known as Warthog, is a single-seat, twin-engine close air support aircraft developed to meet the requirements of the USAF to replace the Martin B-57, Cessna T-37 and Douglas A-1. Production of the A-10 began in 1974 after Fairchild Republic (now Northrop Grumman) was awarded the Close Air Support aircraft competition for its YA-10A design. Production continued until February 1984, and a total of 713 A-10s, including six development aircraft, were manufactured for the
