Designed as a multirole system to escort crewed aircraft, the Airpower Teaming System, sometimes called the Loyal Wingman, began development in 2013 and took its first flight in February 2021. The system is the first indigenous developed military aircraft since the Boomerang of the 1940s. The Australian government invested A$40 million ($28.7 million) into the platform in 2013 for three systems. Upon the news of the first successful test flight of the system in early 2021, a further A$115 million ($89 million) was
invested for an additional three systems for the Royal Australian Air Force.
