J-18 Red Eagle, also called Snowy Owl, is a stealth short take-off and vertical landing naval fighter aircraft being developed by Shenyang Aircraft Design and Research Institute, designed to be operated from PLAN’s future landing assault vehicles. There is no official confirmation about the J-18 project; however, according to media reports, the aircraft had completed a test flight in April 2011. It is not clear whether the J-18 is a fully original aircraft as some sources suggest that it might be a naval version of
the J-15, which originally is an unlicensed copy of Russia’s Su-33. With China planning to expand its naval capabilities and especially naval aviation, J-18 type projects are highly possible.
