The Cougar was designed in 2004 by Force Protection (acquired by General Dynamics in 2011) to meet a US military requirement for a mine-protected vehicle. Later selected for the DoD’s MRAP programme, more than 1,600 were produced to meet the requirement for Category 1 Mine Resistant Utility Vehicles. The Cougar 4x4 has also been ordered by the UK (which has designated it the Ridgeback), Iraq (where it is known as the Badger or ILAV – International Light Armoured Vehicle) and
Yemen.
