The 4x4 RG21 was launched as a prototype by BAE Systems Land Systems South Africa (LSSA) at the AAD defence exhibition in September 2014. In early 2015, Denel completed the acquisition of LSSA. The RG21 development concept was to combine the battle-proven protection of the RG series with the maturity of a COTS driveline, running gear and electronics, to offer a cost-effective vehicle both in terms of manufacture and in-service support, especially when deployed in austere
areas.
