The Russian Armed Forces are believed to have close to 5,000 BMP-2 tracked infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) either in service or held in storage facilities. Although efforts are underway to introduce new tracked IFVs into service with the Russian Army, cost constraints mean that the BMP-2 will not be completely phased out of service in the near future. To redress some of the shortcomings of the BMP-2, KBP has developed the BMP-2M upgrade that has been supplied to the Russian Army and export customers. This differs
from the standard BMP-2 in its new B05Ya01 Berezhok turret armed with a 30 mm cannon. coaxial machine gun, 30 mm automatic grenade launcher and four launchers for the Kornet-E ATGM. A new FCS and day/night sights have also been installed on the turret, as well as a digital R-168 radio.
