First unveiled in scale model form at the Land Forces 2018 exhibition, the AS21 Redback is a tracked IFV developed to meet the Australian Army’s Land 400 Phase 3 requirements for a new platform to replace legacy M113AS4 armoured personnel carriers. Based on the K21 IFV hull used by the Republic of Korea Army, it uses many of the same proven components and subsystems found in that vehicle and the K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzer. In its standard IFV configuration, it will be able to accommodate three crew, eight
passengers, an active protection system and a turret equipped with a 30mm cannon and ATGMs. Other variants utilising the same hull, such as a mortar carrier, will also be proposed.
