General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada (GDLS-C) has produced derivatives of the Piranha series, branded the Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV), since the Canadian Army selected the 6x6 Piranha for its Armoured Vehicle General Purpose requirement in 1977. Altogether 651 LAV IIIs were delivered to Canada beginning in 1997, the majority of which have been upgraded to the new LAV 6.0 standard. New Zealand has also procured the LAV III under the designation of New Zealand Light Armoured Vehicle
(NZLAV).
