Developed in the late 1980s, the T-90 MBT is a modernised version of the Russian Army’s T-72 which incorporates elements of the more expensive T-80. Armed with a 125mm gun and equipped with Kontakt-5 ERA, as well as a day/night sight, it offers greater survivability and situational awareness than its predecessor. Approximately 500 T-90s and T-90As were produced for the Russian Army, while the T-90S export model has been sold to Algeria, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Vietnam and India, where it is
manufactured under licence. In August 2017, the Russian Army announced that it would focus on modernising the T-90 and other MBTs in service in preference to accelerating the acquisition of new-generation vehicles. As a result of this decision, the Russian Army is procuring the T-90M, which sports a new gun, ERA array, fire control system, engine and radio suite.
