Due to delays with the mass production of the T-14 Armata MBT, the Russian Army elected to fund continued upgrades for its vast inventory of legacy tanks. The T-72B3 arose from this modernisation initiative and is designed to provide a cost-effective upgrade package for Russia’s T-72B/T-72B1 MBT fleet. Incorporating significant improvements in firepower, protection and mobility, the T-72B3 aims to extend the service lives of these tanks for several decades. Further upgrades to the standard T-72B3 led to the
introduction of the T-72B3, also known unofficially as the T-72B3M.
