The Type 16 Manoeuvre Combat Vehicle (MCV), formerly known as the Mobile Combat Vehicle, was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) to meet a Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) requirement for an 8x8 105mm-armed armoured vehicle that can be more easily deployed by air, land or sea than an MBT. Deployed with Japan’s Mobile Divisions, the Type 16 MCV allows the JGSDF to rapidly respond to any potential enemy invasion, as it has sufficient tactical and operational mobility to operate in rural areas and
on Japanese islands. The JGSDF plans to acquire 300 Type 16 MCVs to replace the legacy Type 74 MBT.
