The M1A2 System Enhancement Package 3 (M1A2 SEPv3) is the latest production-standard variant of the Abrams MBT. Designed primarily to address the SWaP issues encountered with the M1A2 SEPv2, the M1A2 SEPv3 introduces a new electronic architecture, simplified maintenance procedures and a new auxiliary power unit. In order to improve lethality and survivability, it also features additional frontal armour and a data link to enable the firing of smart, multipurpose projectiles from its 120mm smoothbore gun. SEPv3 is intended to become the new frontline tank for the US Army, which has awarded GDLS a contract to convert up to 435 M1A1 tanks to this standard.
